EIA International Standardization Activities

EIA recognizes that international standards are a strategic tool which, when used correctly, ensure that their customers have a competitively priced product, which is locally available throughout the world. EIA members also understand that the only means to achieve and to retain this competitive edge in today's global marketplace is through active participation in the international standardization committees and the corresponding US Technical Advisory Groups (US TAGs).

Participation in US TAGs is the only officially recognized means for US input to enter the international standardization arena. All U.S. positions on draft international standards are formulated, and all U.S. delegations to international standardization meetings are chosen, based on recommendations of the relevant US TAGs under the guidance of its cognizant Chairman or Technical Advisor (TA). These recommendations are then forwarded to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the U.S. member body of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), or to the U.S. National Committee (USNC), which is the US member body of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). At ANSI, they are given accreditation and are forwarded to the appropriate international authority (i.e., another international member body, an international secretariat, or the ISO/IEC Central Secretariat.)

EIA's International Standardization Section is responsible for the management of 10 international secretariats and over thirty US TAGs. Although most of the international committees for which EIA is responsible are committees of the IEC, EIA also participates in, or closely monitors the work of, the other major international standardization bodies or treaty organizations such as ISO; ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee for Information Technology (ISO/IEC JTC 1); and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Treaty Organization. This ensures that EIA members are kept abreast of the latest developments in these areas.
