Campaigns

EIA campaigns to identify, shape and implement systemic solutions to the biggest environmental challenges facing the globe. Our strategies are shaped by listening, learning and taking the lead from local communities who are on the front lines of protecting their environment. We focus on holding the most powerful global players to account, be they companies, countries or individuals, for their role in violating local rights and stealing natural resources. We seek to be aware and appreciative of the wide landscape of NGOs and other stakeholders and choose to engage where our unique strengths have a chance to make a critical difference. Once involved EIA tries to stay in the fight long-term because we have found that to achieve systemic change, we need commitment as well as passion.

Global trade and its impact on climate, species, and natural resources provide the overarching framework for EIA’s five interlinked core campaigns. We work to protect endangered species, many of which require forest habitat which is being decimated by illegal logging and associated global timber trade. Deforestation is also exacerbating climate change by releasing carbon stored in forests into the atmosphere. Climate change, in turn, threatens the habitats upon which both marine and terrestrial species depend.

Our Climate Campaign focuses on international and domestic policies to phase-down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) – potent greenhouse gases (GHGs) used primarily in refrigeration, air conditioning, and foam applications.

Our Forests Campaign is dedicated to exposing large-scale illegal deforestation and associated international trade, amplifying the voices of impacted local peoples, and shifting demand toward sustainable timber and wood products.

Our Wildlife Campaigns deliver lasting protections for some of the world’s most iconic species – notably elephants and rhinos – threatened by poaching, illegal trade, and habitat destruction.

Our Ocean Campaign is pursuing new global policies to reduce underwater noise pollution from commercial shipping, as well as protections for beluga whales across their range – especially for Alaska’s critically endangered Cook Inlet population.

Our Extractive Industries Campaign aims to reduce mining impacts and injustices around the world by amplifying the voices of frontline communities and advocating for policy shifts that ensure the energy transition is transparent and equitable.
