How Illegal Logging Drives Forest Crime in the Brazilian Amazon and Feeds EU and U.S. Markets
EIA’s new investigation, supported with analysis by the Center for Climate Crime Analysis (CCCA), has uncovered rampant illegal logging, fraud, and corruption in the Brazilian Amazon, tracing illicit timber from five logging sites in the state of Pará to markets in the European Union and United States. Despite laws requiring due diligence, 30 importers were found purchasing tainted wood.
With recent efforts in the EU to weaken due diligence requirements and U.S. environmental enforcement facing budget cuts, now is the time for stronger action, not weaker safeguards. EIA is calling for stricter enforcement, supply chain transparency, and international collaboration to stop the illegal timber trade from destroying the Amazon.
